Xperia Z5 gets a bite of Marshmallow next month

Z4 Tablet and Z3+ join the party too, but everyone else has to wait

With MWC just around the corner, it’s nice to get reminded that smartphone companies haven’t completely forgotten about last year’s handsets just yet.

Sony just confirmed that Android 6 Marshmallow was on the way to some of its top phones and tablets, at least in the UK, with a launch pencilled in for the 7th of March.

The low-key announcement came in a twitter reply to an Xperia phone owner, but will be great news to anyone that’s planning on holding onto their Sony phone for a while yet.

@FalseNugget it’s set to roll out from March 7th for Xperia Z5 series, Z4 Tablet and Z3+ – we will share confirmed timings when its ready

The update will land on the Xperia Z5 series first, which shouldn’t exactly come as a surprise – at the time of writing it’s still the company’s flagship model, and rumours suggest that won’t be changing next week at MWC.

The not-quite-so-new Xperia Tablet Z4 and Xperia Z3+ are next in line, with their updates expected to drop around the same time as the Z5 series.

Older devices will be in for a longer wait, though. Sony would only confirm that slim number of phones, and it remains to be seen if anything more than a year or two old will be getting an official update.

It has been running a preview program for the Xperia Z2, Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact in Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, though, so those phones look likely to get the update at some point in the near future.

This is a UK-centric release date, so it’s not clear if a global rollout will be following suit, and it’s dependent on mobile networks approving the update before it lands on phones.

Even so, if Sony doesn’t have a whole lot planned for Mobile World Congress, this could be the best news to come out of Barcelona for Sony owners – and the show hasn’t even started yet.
